-I K A L- (ENG)

"Are you even listening to yourself?"

Ikal is another one of the demons, however unlike Kástike he's a manservant-although that is just a fancy term for a domestic slave-, and therefore has more contact with the Realm's society and internal structure. Due to the statal organization of the demons -that shall be talked about in another separate entry- Ikal and many others have contact with those working in construction or mining as well as those within societal roles and jobs.

This perspective has deeply shaped  who he is and his worldview, which can seem a bit cynical at first glance. To Ikal, a change is indeed in order, but he deems bloodshed unnecessary and strives to find a way to make the demon's voices heard without hurting the community. Using his airheaded and superficial façade to gain more knowledge about the Realm's internal structure, his intention is to find a crack that the demons can pressure into an opening for progress. No one is aware of this, not even his childhood friend Naniel, and he plans to keep it that way- he doesn't want to put anyone in danger.

This is why he clashes so heavily with Kástike, someone who sees the issues concerning the Realm as a matter of screaming louder and damaging further. And yet, it is undeniable that Ikal has always had a soft spot for Kástike, oftentimes being one of the few demons to be worried for him and show him some sort of support. Kástike always pushed him aside, being incredibly aggressive towards him. This troublesome dynamic eats away at Ikal, even if he'd rather die than admit it.

Ikal appears to be narcissistic and self-serving, and he overcompensates for the daily misery of life in the Realm by objectifying and commodifying himself so as to feel a semblance of control over his situation.  This does not make him any favors, and Naniel has always expressed concern over these self-destructive tendencies, When reality inevitably comes crashing down and Ikal is to face the consequences of his actions and his self perception, there's a breaking point in his life and in the path of the Realm.

The future is always uncertain, and he'll have to come to terms with the fact that living in itself, in the context of the society that surrounds him, is an act of resistance and rebellion.

  1. No, no. He’s got a point. Clever g… Boy. Sorry, too much Jurassic Park. Jokes aside, I love the mole plot – that’s strategy. And I can sympathise with him, you know, ’cause everyone’s a slave to sumthin’. (By the way, where’s the separate entry, you?)
