"Bloodshed will only bring ruin"

Death, Thanatos or The Grim Reaper is the eldest Higher Fear: the fear of death and "the other side". Legend says that Death was the first chosen ruler of the Realm; and while this is not actually correct because back then no such thing as the Realm existed, it is true that the fellow Lesser and Higher fears let themselves be peacefully lead by The Grim Reaper many millenia ago.

The tale of Death is a story lost to time, a story left as a myth thanks to the mass burning of scriptures in the historical archives of the Realm and the rewriting of said passages. Thus, Death is widely seen as a traitor; however, her name arises no animadversion towards her or what she represents. As she is equally as powerful as the current Ruler and has not made any public moves in centuries, she is a neutral figure in the current structure of the Realm.

However, there is a small group of ancient elders that secretly support a hypothetical return of Death; this group will be a key element in the Realm's current history. These elders survived the first great rebellion-however, for security purposes they live unassuming lives, mixing with the shadows and not drawing any attention to themselves. Therefore, their stories are destined to those who want to listen.

After her banishment, Death led a quiet life in an unknown location unrelated to the Realm. Where she resides remains a mystery to this day as a measure to prevent any revolutionary ideas among the people, but also to keep her safe from any potential harm, since she may become useful to the Ruler at any point in time. Death lives in complete seclusion, separate from her old confidant Xejasmos. She is unaware of the former's current situation, although she has feared for his fate ever since they were separated.

A pacifist, and never prone to violence in the first place, Death regrets the First Rebellion deeply. While aware of the injustice and misery that Valeska brought with their regime, if she could have fought against it in another way, she would have. In the end, countless lives were lost with little to no impact to the actual system, and the overall situation worsened since Death could no longer be there for the creatures that remained as a silently supportive figure. Overcome with guilt and shame, she feels as if she has failed those who trusted her miserably. She has spent centuries theorizing about a slower yet more fruitful method of overcoming the situation, but it seems that she has not arrived at a conclusion yet.

A crucial misunderstanding will bring her worst fears to life in the near future, and there will be nothing left to do.
